Glad to be back! It's been a while...this weekend is a big one for Scrabble, with the tremendous Niagara Falls tourney in full swing. I wish I could be there, but, alas, a work conflict kept me home. Don't you just hate it when real life gets in the way of Scrabbling?<br />
<br />
Anyway, while most of the articles here are applicable whether you play TWL or Collins, I've been asked to write a piece for a specific audience: TWL players who are looking to try Collins and want to know how best to go about learning the Collins-only words. As I'm sure you know, the tricky thing is to have the useful Collins-only words in your arsenal for Collins games without being confused by them when playing TWL games. I've taken this journey myself - I don't play much TWL these days, but for many years I played in both lexicons regularly, and so I had to come up with strategies for knowing which words I couldn't play in TWL games. I did manage to maintain roughly the same level of play in both lexicons, but it did require a lot of extra effort that I'm rather glad I don't have to expend these days. Though if I had a compelling reason to take up TWL again, I'd have no problem embracing the challenge.<br />
<br />
This year's Nationals has a Collins newcomer prize pool, generously arranged by Norman Wei, which might be a good motivator for some of you to give the international game a try. So I'll write here for the perspective of someone aiming to contend for those prizes.<br />
<br />
The first thing you need to know is that <b>a little Collins knowledge can take you a long way.</b> Unless you're aiming really high, you don't need more than a small percentage of those crazy Collins words to be able to play well. The TWL words you know are (with a very few exceptions) all valid in Collins. Nor do you have to make any radical changes to your strategy - it's the same game, just with more words. Play smart, but don't play scared, and don't get discouraged if you fall behind early; comebacks happen more in Collins, so if you hang in there and get some good tiles, you might well be able to overcome that early deficit.<br />
<br />
The most crucial Collins-only words to know are the same sorts of words that are most useful for TWL: the twos, most of the threes, some useful fours and fives, maybe some high-probability bingos. That's a good thing, because if you restrict your Collins study to the kinds of words you already know well in TWL, it'll be easier to keep the words separate in your brain.<br />
<br />
The twos come first in the learning sequence, followed by the threes, just as in TWL. The twos are easy to learn, since there are only 19 of them. There are a few hundred threes, so that'll take a little more time, but don't stress if you're not absolutely perfect on those; just try to get as many as you can. I'd recommend writing the threes out on a piece of paper, separating them by what letter they start with, and then reading aloud and periodically making up mini-quizzes for yourself from that list - can you name the Collins threes that start with HO, or MA, or V?<br />
<br />
But there's something else just as important to learning the short Collins words, if not more important: playing lots of Collins games! It's a common thing for Collins newcomers to miss plays involving words like DI#, OO#, ITA# or OYE#, even if you know those words are legal - this happens because, as a TWL player, you're not trained to see and think of those words as possibilities. So fire up Quackle, or go on ISC, or grab a Collinsy friend, and plan to play a lot of games. Playing quickly, within your limits, is good here too, because it gets your eyeballs on more positions and trains you more thoroughly to see what is possible on a Collins board.<br />
<br />
When looking for more words to add to your arsenal after the shorties, consider that hooks are VERY important in Collins. There are a lot of surprising hooks among the short words, like A(NOW)#, E(VET)#, (FEW)S#. You don't need to know them all, but looking at fours that are formed by common hook letters like A, E or S being added to threes will help you avoid nasty surprises (and create some yourself!)<br />
<br />
Also, Collins gives you a lot more ways to play through vowel-heavy racks, so you'll want to learn the short words with lots of vowels well. It's not a terribly long list, though a lot of the words are decidedly weird. (Remember, it's EUOI#, not EOUI*. It's of Greek origin, so remember that EUPHORIA is Greek too and, like a number of other words from Greek, starts with EU.)<br />
<br />
You shouldn't need very many bingos just yet unless you're planning to dive into Collins more deeply after Nationals. Prioritizing the short stuff is your best plan, but if you want to learn a few bingos and have the time, all the better. For bingos, I would focus on the highest-probability words that do NOT have TWL solutions. Knowing RESIANT# and STARNIE# probably won't help you, because if your rack is AEINRST, you can probably do just as well with one of the zillion TWL bingos available. Knowing EROTISE# or ORNATER# definitely could help you, though. While I usually recommend favoring eights over sevens for long-term bingo skill building, I would reverse that advice here. First, you want to make it easier on yourself because your time for study is limited, and second, it's easier in Collins to make overlapping plays that can take out bingo lines for eights, so you may not have as many opportunities to play eight-letter bingos as you might think.<br />
<br />
As for how to keep these words from infecting your TWL game after your Collins adventure, the tried and true method is to use the # symbol (octothorps, hashes, pound signs, whatever you want to call them) for Collins words that aren't valid in TWL. Whenever you write the words, use the # symbols; if you're studying with Zyzzyva or something else, either set the quizzes up to require the symbols or add them mentally (that is, if you're doing an anagram quiz with both TWL and Collins words, make yourself identify which lexicon it is in order to count the question as correct). Though I don't advise doing too many quizzes with mixed TWL and Collins words - studying the Collins words exclusively for now will keep them separated better when you go back to TWL.<br />
<br />
A word about the challenge rule, because it's an important difference in the two games. The penalty in Collins games for challenging a valid word isn't a devastating loss of turn - it's just 5 or 10 points added to the opponent's play. But if the word is invalid, the player playing it still loses a turn, as in TWL. This means that you should usually challenge even if you only have a little doubt about the word. And on the flip side, play only words you're very sure of: if you have some doubts about the word you're thinking of playing, you might want to look for a word you know is good instead. Don't just throw something on the board and hope it's valid. (Though if you sense your opponent is hesitant to challenge, and many newcomers to Collins from TWL are, you might be able to get away with a little more.)<br />
<br />
Above all, have fun! I remember when I started out in TWL really enjoying the discovery of strange new words - finding out, whoa, cool, I can play JIAO, or IXIA, or FREMD, or CUBEB. They looked bizarre to me at the time, but they're old friends now. (I even know what they mean!) Taking up Collins extended that joyous experience for me even further, and even if you don't go into learning Collins very far, many players find that the extra words open up intriguing possibilities in games. If you find TWL is more your speed, that's okay too - every player appreciates the game a little differently - but if you embrace the Collins challenge and get comfortable with playing it, you might find you really enjoy it.<br />

How often are nines playable? Not very often, really. As I understand it, about every 10-15 games or so, a position comes up where a nine-letter (or longer) bingo is both playable and the best play available. And many of those are just eights with a standard S plural or -ED and -ING forms of shorter verbs, which don't require studying nines specifically to know. You could probably win a Nationals or Worlds without playing a single nine-letter bingo, if you did everything else well enough.<br />
<b><br /></b>
The nines do have their uses, though. The ones that are unconventional hooks on eights, like INTERVALE or RELOCATEE, can be used to open up some doors for yourself, particularly when your opponent isn't likely to recognize the threat of the hook. Knowing nines can also give you some elegant extension possibilities, particularly when they hit a triple word square - NON(POETIC), COUCH(ETTE), EX(CHEQUER) and IMIN(AZOLE) are a few of the many I've seen on expert boards. It's rare you'll get to play one, but if you're thinking about those possibilities, that's a sign that you're really engaged in finding your best play - and that's a good habit to cultivate.<br />
<br />
In terms of study priority, I'd rank the top couple of thousand nines on par with the medium-low probability eights. Neither category will help you that much, but if you've studied that far into the book, you're already contending with the law of diminishing returns either way. Nines that play through certain two-letter words are a little more useful, and it's a good habit to think of these as part of your board vision, particularly when you have a blank and lots of options - TI is a good one, for example, if you have words ending in -ATION. ER and RE, DE and ED are ripe for having nines played to or through them. (In Collins, CH# allows some beautiful nines every once in a while.) In a lot of situations where a nine-letter bingo is optimal, the nine is a double-double through a two-letter word in a double-double lane, so be attuned to that possibility.<br />
<br />
But mostly, learning nines means you're a real word freak! That's not for everyone, I'll grant, but nines as a group of words are really fun to explore if you're into that. And studying them, while they're unlikely to be played, still has some value: they build your anagramming muscles. Remember when I talked about how eights were much tougher than sevens? Adding a ninth letter takes that up another big notch. The nines also contain a lot more compound words and longer word parts, making the anagramming task much more complex - and satisfying, when you solve the puzzles. You do enough of those, and eights start looking EASY. And oh my god, if you ever did get (BA)HUVRIHI down...okay, maybe it's just another bingo. 76 points is 76 points. But if you look at the track records of the very best players, about all of them have a body of work that includes a few sweet long-word finds like SAPROZOIC, SATINWOODS, AUBERGINES or WATERZOOI, and that's not an accident. It's an indicator of the desire these players have to master the whole game, including the furthest edges of the word list.<br />
<br />
I do have to warn of a certain disease, though: just because you see a nine doesn't mean it's the best play. Sometimes it's not, and sorry, tournaments don't give out style points, so take the best play and just be happy you saw I(TI)NERANT for fewer points and worse board position than ENTRAIN elsewhere.<br />

Sometimes you'll hear Scrabble players wonder aloud how they could be having a poor run of tournament results after having stepped up their word studying. After all, they say, I know more words now - how am I not winning more? This syndrome is particularly acute after a Nationals or Worlds, since many players are motivated to study up before the biggest tournaments. And it's not surprising: the more effort you put into something, the more confident you become and the higher your expectations go, and it can be jarring when those expectations are not immediately fulfilled.<br />
<br />
Some of that is not recognizing the variance in small sample sizes. Even a 31-game Nationals is not a very large sample of games, and there's a lot of luck of the draw in Scrabble as we all know. Sometimes the tile gods decree that it's just not your year, that it's someone else's turn to shine. (Which is okay - it's good to be happy for your friends' successes, too!) And sometimes it's because other parts of your game need more attention - in fact, that's always true; every part of your game needs attention if you want to excel - but someone who's recently been deep in the books can lose sight of their weaknesses in other parts of the game until they get to the Nationals and face a few good opponents who know how to exploit those weaknesses. (If you want to know how to improve those parts of your game, I'd recommend among other things reading the Scrabble Players Handbook, and once you're a little further along, Kenji Matsumoto's wonderful books on strategy.)<br />
<br />
But the biggest cause of this feeling, I think, is not recognizing the nature of the process involved in learning Scrabble words. Like a lot of learning endeavors, it's cumulative. Success in Scrabble is all about the long run, and success in learning the words is the same. I started studying Scrabble words in 2002, after reading <i>Word Freak</i>. I studied a lot those first few years; I figured that since there were so many words to learn, no time like the present to start learning them. I am still benefiting today from the practicing I did back then. It's about building a strong foundation, and then building upward and outward from that foundation as you gain the skills needed to encode the information in your mind quicker and more reliably.<br />
<br />
This does not mean you will benefit right away - it might take a while. Though you might: thinking back to my first year in Scrabble, my third and fourth tournaments were rather disappointing outings, and I had started to wonder when all the hours of studying I was putting in at the time would start paying off. Then my fifth tournament came, and I got the tiles to play some of those delicious words I'd been learning like LENTISK and SAXATILE and TRAGOPAN. I went 10-1 and gained almost 200 rating points, allowing me to play in division one thereafter, which was my big goal at the time. And I was thrilled, of course. But if that magical weekend in Lampasas, Texas, hadn't happened, it wouldn't have changed the nature of anything - I'd have still reached my destination, just a little slower. The nice thing about learning the words is that it always pays off; it can't not. If you build the ability to find the kind of plays that win games, and you play enough tourneys, know that eventually the wins will come. It just might be sooner, or it might be later.<br />
<br />
You might be tempted to ramp up your word practice before a big tournament. This is fine - I do it sometimes, too, as I'm sure many other players do. You want to be able to bring your best game to the table. But especially in a long tournament like Nationals or Worlds, it's important to keep a level head and keep your expectations in check. Focusing on how you're doing in the tournament can distract you from the more important task in front of you when you sit down to play, which is to find the best plays you can with the skills you have, in the time you have. You're not going to play perfectly; no one ever has. But know this: <b>the studying you do may not pay off today, but if you're studying the right things and putting in the time, it will pay off. </b><br />

At one point midgame with the score still close, he tried RETIN(G)LE*, which I challenged off right away; I was able to play my own bingo in the same spot and went on to win comfortably. (The real word in those letters, GREENLIT, didn't fit on the board.)<br />

I don't bring this up to mock non-native English speakers, of course. In fact, I have even greater admiration for a player who achieves sufficient word knowledge to play in top divisions without having a base of native language to start with. Such a player has to study harder to overcome that obstacle.<br />
<br />
I'm sure most of you who are native English speakers would have challenged off RETINGLE* pretty quickly, too. We know what "tingle" means, and therefore we know that the RE- prefix almost surely doesn't work with "tingle." We may not be able to give a linguistic analysis of why it sounds wrong, but we know it does. But if you don't speak the language and all you know is that "tingle" is a verb and lots of verbs take RE- in front, RETINGLE* isn't an unreasonable guess.<br />
<br />
You hear it said sometimes that definitions don't matter in Scrabble. That's correct - the rules of the game do not require you to be able to define the words you play, and for the most part trying to memorize definitions isn't a good use of your limited study time. But there are times when we all rely on our working knowledge of the language to help us out in a game, and knowing what words mean is part of that.<br />
<br />
The most useful aspect of knowing what a word means, for Scrabble purposes, is knowing what part of speech it is. If you know PAIK means "to beat or strike," then you know it's a verb and you also know that PAIKED and PAIKING are good. (Not all verbs have regular inflecting forms like this, but most do; you'll just have to learn the exceptions, sorry.) If you know DORMIE means "ahead in golf by as many holes as remain to be played," then you know it almost surely doesn't take an S, and you also know DORMIER* and DORMIEST* are invalid, since there's about no plausible way a word with that meaning could have comparing forms. There are, of course, many tricky exceptions along the way: for example, in common parlance, the word ELFIN is an adjective meaning the same as ELFLIKE, so you'd figure ELFINS is no good, but it is - at least one of the source dictionaries for Scrabble also lists a noun sense for it. English can be a wonderfully ragged mess, and that's part of why it's such a good language for word gaming.<br />
<br />
And even beyond knowing the part of speech, knowing what a word means often guarantees you'll be 100 percent sure of it. Knowing definitions never hurts, and now and then it can help. But if the plan isn't to sit around memorizing definitions, what's the way to get some benefit from knowing how certain words operate and what they mean?<br />
<br />
When I started learning Scrabble words, the available learning programs did not include the definitions of words. But then Zyzzyva came along, and Zyzzyva has definitions. This was actually a big step forward. I wasn't trying to memorize definitions, but I found that just eyeballing them for a split second when they came on the screen in Zyzzyva got a surprising lot of them into my memory, especially with words I got a lot of repetitions on. The osmosis method, you might say. Since knowing parts of speech is the biggest benefit, sometimes I'd take a second to say to myself when a word came up, that's a verb, or that's an adjective and compares, or that's an interjection that doesn't take S, that kind of thing. Anything that gives your brain more information about a word with minimal added time and effort is good.<br />
<br />
<b>So if you can use a study program that provides definitions, I advise you to do so.</b> Most desktop applications for learning words now have definitions, though some mobile apps don't. The only time I would suggest flat-out studying definitions would be learning which three- and four-letter words are not just regular nouns taking S. Even then, you probably don't want to make that too high a priority; for one, studying longer words will often give you -ED and -ING forms that fill in those gaps about as well. (And rote memorization is boring, so you don't want to make yourself do more of that than you really need. You'll study more and learn more if you bore yourself less.)<br />

This week I have an exercise for you that should get your neurons firing in a useful direction. And it's not something that requires all-encompassing attention, either - it's the sort of thing you might do in idle moments while driving (though please pay attention to the road!), or showering, or waiting in lines. You can do it at a leisurely pace; whatever suits you. Exercises like this train your brain to swim in the ocean of words even during times when you're not explicitly "studying." Remember - every little bit helps!<br />
<br />
I'll present a simple version of the exercise here. First, pick a couple of consonants - making at least one of them a mid-point tile (BCFHKMPVWY) is a good start, and I'd avoid S or JQXZ at first. For example, let's choose D and P. Your task is this: without writing anything down or having tiles in front of you to shuffle, try to think of words that include D, P, and any two vowels. Two vowels, two consonants, four-letter words. If you feel unsure of some of your answers, either check them after you're done, if you can, or make a mental note to check them later with a program like Zyzzyva.<br />
<br />
What you're doing here, starting with shorter, simpler words, is teaching yourself to turn around groups of letters in your mind. The complete list of fours with a D, a P and two vowels: APED, PADI, PAID, APOD, DOPA, DEEP, PEED, PIED, DOPE, OPED, DUPE, POOD, UPDO (and DOUP#, if you're Collins), PUDU. Notice that the D, the P, and the vowels can appear in many different sequences in the words. To find all of these, notice what you have to do - in your mind, you have to evaluate DP plus these vowel combos: AA, AE, AI, AO, AU, EE, EI, EO, EU, II, IO, IU, OO, OU, UU. But four letters isn't very many to juggle in your mind, so you can move quickly. And while you'll still have to examine each combination for at least a few seconds, your intuitive familiarity with English will help inform you that, for example, DP plus EE is much more likely to yield words than DP plus IU is. Through this exercise, that native intuition will be honed even further, and you'll solidify the studying you've already done. (Also, the ability to anagram without tiles or writing allows you to study much faster, covering more words and getting more practice on the troublesome ones.)<br />
<br />
You may be wondering why I stipulated above that you should do this exercise entirely in your head - that is, no writing things down or having tiles in front of you. There are two reasons: first, doing the exercise in your head frees you to practice your skills even in situations where you don't have tiles or writing materials at hand. But second and more important, anagramming in your head is an important Scrabble skill. As I said in a recent post, the less time you have to expend on finding words, the more time you have left over to consider the strategic implications of your plays, and because the strategic elements of the game often require deeper, more multidimensional thought, it's better to be able to devote your clock time to that purpose than to finding words and plays. And being able to shift around letters in your head feeds into your skill at visualizing plays on the board, too - finding the best play can require seeing complex overlaps or finding plays through disconnected letters on the board. These are the kinds of plays that experts often see without even thinking very hard, because the process of mentally turning around letters has become so ingrained. If you want to excel at Scrabble, you should look to make these skills second nature for yourself.<br />
<br />
By doing this exercise with various letter combinations, you're building your feel for the structures of the words, and systematizing that ability means that you can call on it during games to help you. Even better, the act of cycling mentally through letters and combinations of letters can help you in other ways: for example, when you have a blank on your rack, you want to be able to go confidently and quickly through the alphabet, imagining the blank as every different letter of the alphabet and being able to find what the blank allows you to play. Rehearsing the act of mental cycling makes that process feel natural, over time, and this skill will serve you well whether you're considering bingos with a blank (a good spot to be in!) or just finding the best shorter word you can play in an important or high-scoring spot on the board. You want to get your Scrabble brain into that cycling habit, and little informal exercises like this help cultivate that habit.<br />
<br />
If you're advanced enough in your word practice that two consonants and two vowels is feeling easy, there are any number of ways to make this exercise tougher. Add a third consonant, or require a third vowel, and try to find five-letter words, or if you're feeling particularly masochistic, add a blank tile that could be either consonant or vowel to your puzzle. Or require the consonants to be in a certain order, or...well, any other rule you want to impose. There's a variant I like to play during my long commute to work sometimes: most license plates in my part of the world have consonant-heavy letter strings. I'll take a string from a neighboring car I see and try to think of all the words with those letters plus any number of vowels, or if it's a particularly clunky set of consonants like GJW, I'll allow a blank or extra consonants into the solution. You'll remember I mentioned the last time that saying words aloud or to yourself, particularly ones you miss in practice, can help reinforce what you've learned. Today I'll talk about a specific way to apply that technique to help you reach correct solutions faster and more reliably. It's especially useful for words that don't follow the most common prefix and suffix patterns.<br />
<br />
Practicing solving an anagram is really practicing a path to the solution. The first time you see AGIMNOST, maybe you think of trying -ING words first, then -INGS, then MIS- or -ISM or -IST words, and so on. Those are all false paths in this case, and you'll probably give up before thinking of trying ANTI- words. The first thing you saw was probably something like MOATINGS* or SOMATING*, and either you entered one of those as an incorrect guess or you correctly ruled them out but did not find the real answer.<br />

You've missed the question, and the solution is revealed: ANTISMOG. I can solve this one reliably now, but when I was first studying it, I would always see MOATINGS* and either I'd think it was good and try it or I'd go down a number of other blind alleys and give up. What I needed was a way to be able to jump from my instinctive wrong answer (MOATINGS*) directly to the right one (ANTISMOG). So I would say "MOATINGS* is ANTISMOG, MOATINGS* is ANTISMOG" to myself every time I missed it (or even the first few times I happened to get it right, until I knew it well enough that I didn't need to). Whenever I see those letters now, I still see MOATINGS* first, but that sentence I said to myself long ago is ingrained enough that I instantly know it's ANTISMOG without having to try anything else. I don't always use this technique, but it's nice to have in the tool box.<br />
<br />
So that's the principle for today: <b>For anagrams you have trouble with, try to create a link in your mind between the wrong answer you tend to see first and the solution.</b><br />

I will warn you that there is a hazard to this method, and I've been bitten by it a couple of times. You have to be careful that you don't start thinking of your wrong guess as an actual legal word. I played OVERBIND* in a game a long time ago, thinking, oh yeah, that sounds familiar to me, I think that's good. Shortly after I hit my clock I realized, whoops, no, OVERBIND* is OVENBIRD. Fortunately my opponent didn't challenge. This isn't usually a problem, but it's something to watch out for - when you see a word during a game, spend a moment to make sure it's a real word and not just a reminder for a different real word.<br />

Let's say you're fairly new to the game and you've been practicing anagramming Scrabble words for a little while. You're at a tournament, and after the first day's games are done, you go out to dinner with a large group of Scrabblers, including a few expert players. At some point in the pleasant evening, one of your fellow diners throws out an anagram puzzle or two for the table, and you're wowed by how quickly certain players can get the answers. You're able to solve most of the anagrams you've studied when you practice at home, if you stick with them long enough to find the solutions, but you can't imagine being able to flip the letters around in your mind so fast that you can reliably solve thorny anagrams in just a few seconds.<br />
<br />
Most of that is no secret: like anything else, there's no substitute for putting the practice time in. But you absolutely can tailor your practice in ways that will help develop your solving speed. Which leads me to another of Geoff's Scrabble word learning principles: <b>To learn to find words fast, study fast.</b><br />
<br />
Why is speed essential, besides the mild pleasures of impressing your Scrabbling friends at the dinner table? Well, it's clear that anagramming speed can help you in live games. Scrabble isn't just a game of words or anagramming - it's a game of decisions, and the better decisions you make, the more often you'll win, over time. Each of your turns has two components: first, you're trying to find some good possible plays you can make, and second, you're trying to make the best choice from the ones you find, considering all the relevant factors in the game at the time. If you can find good candidate plays quickly and reliably, it means you'll have more time left to consider which of your candidates is best to play - and that's a much better use of your time. You don't want to find yourself having to figure out a complex pre-endgame with 90 seconds left on your clock because it took you four minutes to find your bingo back on turn six.<br />
<br />
Why does studying fast lead to anagramming fast? The main reason is that there are a whole lot of words to learn in Scrabble, as I'm sure you've noticed. And if you go fast, you'll get your eyeballs on a lot more words - and even better, you'll get practice on words with all different kinds of structures: common prefixes and suffixes, less common prefixes and suffixes, compounds, plurals of shorter words, oddball variant spellings, unclassifiable foreign-looking words, etc. Your brain starts to absorb how these word parts tend to work, and over time you'll notice you're arriving at solutions quicker as a result, even on words you haven't practiced much before. That's your anagramming muscles being built! Also, when you're working at a good pace, you're conditioning your brain to focus more intensely - and believe me, over time your brain will get used to this demand and it will feel normal. And when THAT happens, you can reliably find words even faster.<br />
<br />
Also, remember what I said earlier about getting into a rhythm when studying and avoiding frustration? Nothing is more frustrating in word practice than staring at a set of letters for two minutes straight and not finding anything. (It's not much fun in games, either.) Don't let yourself get to that point - it's better to mark an anagram as missed and move on if you flat don't know it or can't find it after a short time. (It might also help you to write down or say aloud to yourself the words missed. Anything to get it in your brain a little better for next time.)<br />
<br />
If you go fast, yes, it means you'll miss more words in practice. Your solving percentages might not look so pretty. But that's okay, because the fact that you're going fast means you can get more repetitions on those words. Every time you see a solution to an anagram, even if you didn't solve it successfully, builds up a little more awareness of the word in your brain. Repetitions are especially good (and needed) for obscure words or words with unusual patterns. What looks like anagramming is really a combination of anagramming and memory, so any little thing you can do to expose more words more often to your memory will help.<br />

So how fast should you go? If you're not that experienced, I'd recommend allowing about 15-20 seconds maximum to solve an anagram, and as you get better at solving anagrams, you should reduce that time gradually. You can allow more time as needed if there are multiple solutions to a question or if you expect the words you're practicing to be unfamiliar or difficult - if you think you've almost got it by the time limit, sure, go a few seconds longer and complete your attempt. You can use the timer feature in Zyzzyva or some other timer, though it doesn't have to be quite that structured; I usually just estimate it. If I'm not getting a particular anagram after what feels like my usual allotted time, then I don't really have it down that well, and I need to put it back in the "need to practice" pile (cardbox 0, if you're cardboxing). There's no shame in that; it's why you practice!<br />
<br />
This is also an excellent reason to use Aerolith (aerolith.org, Word Walls). While relying *only* on Aerolith for your word practice has its drawbacks, as mentioned in an earlier post here, racing to solve the anagrams on an Aerolith board is the best way to develop sheer anagramming speed there is. Highly recommended.<br />

(If you don't know, Aerolith - aerolith.org - is a wonderful website where you race against the clock to unscramble words. It's excellent practice, and I highly recommend it.)<br />

The first symptom of Aerolith disease can be seen when you're playing a game: Let's say it's your turn to start a game, and you have DEIKLMU on your rack. If those letters came up in an anagramming practice session, where you know that there's at least one solution, most experienced anagrammers would find MUDLIKE right away. There aren't very many other ways those letters could combine to make a plausible word, and finding MUDLIKE doesn't require you to know obscure words at all. Easy to solve.<br />
<br />
So, returning to the game, you slap down MUDLIKE, happily announce your score of 88 and hit the clock. And...your opponent challenges it off, because it's not a valid Scrabble word. (Kudos to your opponent for knowing it's not good - I wasn't sure until I looked it up just before writing this.)<br />
<br />
There's no easy way to fix that problem. The optimal solution for making sure you know MUDLIKE* is no good is to commit all the -LIKE words to memory, and you could do that for similar categories (OUT- words, -LESS words, etc.) - but there are a whole lot of those, so it's going to take you a lot of time, and rote memorizing is easy to get burned out on for most of us. I haven't done anything like that in years, though what I will do now and then - say, a few days before a Nationals - is bring up those lists on my computer screen and read them, speaking the words to myself as I go (or aloud, if I'm alone). This creates at least a dim recent memory of the words. Every little bit helps, right? Having more than one way for your brain to come up with a word is a good thing.<br />
<br />
A second symptom is particular to folks who use Aerolith (WordWalls) for all their word practice. There's no penalty for guessing wrong in Word Walls, and so with certain anagrams there's a tendency to type the wrong answer first and then realize, oh yeah, it's not OVERBIND*, it's OVENBIRD or whatever, and then type the right one and move on. In a game, though, every once in a while I'll mistakenly think of my usual wrong guess as being correct. I can usually catch myself before I put the phoney on the board, but if I get careless...<br />
<br />
Do understand that none of this is in any way a criticism of Aerolith or other study sites or programs. They're great! I have a case of Aerolith disease myself that could use some fixing, but I've used it a whole lot to study because I find that the format is the most fun for me. And remember what I said when I started the blog: it's better to have an imperfect method you enjoy than a perfect one you don't. Aerolith makes me want to practice words, and that's the most important thing. But when I want to review more in depth or identify holes in my word knowledge like the ones I described above, I'll switch to something like Zyzzyva. Or Xerafin, a new web-based cardboxing app I've been trying out lately.<br />
<br />
Or I might try an approach other than anagram solving - could be rote memorizing, could be mnemonics, could be trying to recall words in certain patterns, could be spot-the-phoney quizzing. Any of those methods can help. But I am a firm believer that solving alphagrams is the best way to build a big arsenal of words for yourself, so I'll always spend most of my practice time doing that.<br />

Today, I've got a list of THE most useful fours to get you started.<br />

IMPORTANT: In the last post, I discussed using "playability" as a way to prioritize medium-length words for study, and I mentioned that Zyzzyva gives you a way to search for and rank words by their playability. What I've found out since then is that the current version of (NASPA) Zyzzyva does NOT have accurate playability values, so unfortunately you can't use it for this purpose.<br />
<br />
I do have access to sound playability values elsewhere, however, so I can fill in that gap here and there as we go. The words below are all very high-probability fours that are valid in TWL; below them is an additional set of words that are CSW-only, for those who play Collins. I've omitted words that are merely three-letter words with a plural S attached to the end. Some of these you'll already know well, of course, so I'd suggest focusing on the ones you're not used to yet. You can try memorizing these words, or anagramming them with study software or flashcards, or any mix of methods that you find helps you remember them.<br />
<br />
What will also help you learn these words is the same advice I give for the threes: supplement your learning by playing lots of games, so you can get used to seeing these words played on a board and teach your brain to think of them as potential plays.<br />

If you read conversations about Scrabble, you may encounter the term "playability." I think of playability as an estimate that tries to answer this question: "How much would it hurt not to know this word?" For example, QI has the highest playability of any word, because there are so many game situations where playing QI is both possible and a good idea. Not having QI would really hold you back, wouldn't it? On the other hand, not knowing COBWEBBY (extremely low playability) is very unlikely to cost you anything, since it's so rare that COBWEBBY is even an option.<br />
<br />
Zyzzyva allows you to order and filter lists of words by playability, so you can use that to ensure that you're learning the most important words first. I don't necessarily advise using playability to learn bingos, but for fours, fives, and sixes, it's great. The high-playability fours and fives - and sixes, though it's rarer that you'll get to play those - tend to accomplish one of two things: they either allow you to score very well with a high-point tile or two, or they allow you to clean up imbalances or difficult combinations on your rack. (Sometimes both!)<br />
<br />
I'll post some high-playability lists here soon. You'll see that most of them fall into a few basic categories: words with J, Q, X or Z, words with a lot of vowels, or words that allow you to play off a clunky letter or two.<br />
<br />
A good first learning goal might be something like this: the top 500 fours (by playability), the top 200 fives, and the top 50 sixes. When you're feeling reasonably comfortable with those, continue with a similar ratio; after a while you can add higher percentages of fives and sixes if you like. I don't think it's a good idea to restrict yourself to learning every last four in the word list before you start on fives, or every five before you start on sixes. Just make sure you start at the top of the playability list for each length.<br />

As for how to learn them, everyone's approach is a little different, but I can tell you what worked for me. First, I typed out every word from the list that I didn't know or wouldn't have been sure of, with maybe 3-7 words each line (trying to keep the easy to remember strings of words together), forming larger chunks of 30-40 words. When I had the chunks of words ready, I then practiced typing them out from memory until I had them down pretty well. Once I had the words mostly memorized, I switched to a study program (LeXpert back then, the precursor of Zyzzyva) and practiced unscrambling the words to make sure I could think of and unscramble them reliably.<br />
<br />
The process above takes a fair amount of time, and not everyone does it that way: a lot of players who know the mid-length words well got there just by going straight to Zyzzyva or wherever and anagramming them a whole lot, the way I typically would for bingos. I'm glad I took the approach I did, though, particularly for the fours. That's because solving a four-letter anagram is usually very easy - for a lot of them, only one, or a few, combinations might make any sense - so what can happen sometimes is that you can guess the word from its anagram right when you know there's a word in there, but you're not really sure the word is good if you get those letters in a real game, where you don't know if there's a word in there or not. Because I'd done that memorizing, I had another good way to figure out whether the word I was thinking of playing was valid - I could mentally go through the list. And for fours in particular, that's really important, because seasoned Scrabble opponents tend to know most of them and rarely let phony fours go unchallenged.<br />
<br />
Even if you don't have time or inclination to do that much rote memorizing - the least fun part of word learning, I agree - it's probably a good idea to do the part where you write out the words you don't already know, at least once or twice, just because writing them down helps cement them in your brain just that much more.<br />

When players start studying the bingos (or bonuses, outside North America) - the seven- and eight-letter words - they're presented with learning two skills at once. The first is knowing that a word is valid and being able to recall it, particularly when the word is obscure, and the second is being able to look at a tricky string of letters like AEFILNRU and find the real word or words in those letters. (That's a quiz: I'll give the answer at the bottom of the post.) This is all true for the shorter words as well, but the bingos are where you'll rely most on your unscrambling abilities. So you'll need to study bingos in a way that not only teaches you the words, but also builds that unscrambling ability - because the sooner you build that ability, the quicker you can add bingos to your arsenal.<br />
<br />
I've met a number of newer word learners who maybe started their bingo study by learning the seven-letter words formed by adding a letter to six-letter bingo stems like SATIRE or RETINA, and they've gotten a decent way into that. But if I ask them about eights, they say they're waiting to get a good number of sevens under their belt before tackling the eights. That sounds sensible: when we learn the shorter words, we typically do the threes, then the fours, then the fives.<br />
<br />
However, for bingos, I think there's a better way to fly. When I started practicing bingos, I noticed pretty quickly that eights were a good deal tougher than sevens to unscramble - I was much slower on eights and got fewer of them right. That one extra letter adds a lot more possibilities for your brain to sort through, and if you don't have that unscrambling practice under your belt, it can be slow going.<br />
<br />
This is why I recommend that new bingo learners actually spend MORE time on eights than on sevens, maybe a 60/40 or 65/35 ratio in favor of eights. Sevens and eights are, in general, about equally important to learn, but if you do more eights to start with, you'll build those unscrambling muscles quicker, which will also help a lot when you work on the sevens. It's like adding a little more weight to the bar when you're working out; the workout will be a little tougher, but the long-term payoff is well worth it.<br />
<br />
However, remember what I said about making the learning fun? If you're not that good at anagramming yet and you take on a big pile of high-probability eights, you might find yourself getting pretty frustrated with your low solving percentage and lack of speed. That's not fun. So I recommend two things to help you lessen that frustration and build more momentum.<br />
<br />
<b>First, when you study high-probability eights initially, don't just take on everything in the top 1000. Instead, study only those alphagrams in the top 1000 that have one and only one solution.</b> (Zyzzyva allows you to search for those easily, and I'll post a list of these here today or tomorrow when I get time.) So instead of annoying yourself by not remembering and finding every last one of the zillion words in ACEINRST, you can just concern yourself with remembering and finding one solution at a time. That way you'll move through the words faster and have a better flow. Once you get a bunch of these words learned and become a little more comfortable with solving eights, you can go back and add the ones with multiple answers.<br />
<br />
<b>Second, when you study eights, don't limit yourself to just the highest-probability eights.</b> Here's why: high-probability words, which are mostly collections of one-point tiles, are generally much harder to anagram than lower-probability words are. Lower-probability words tend to have high-point tiles like K or Q or W or Z in them, and those letters can simplify your unscrambling process a lot, since there are fewer ways those letters can appear in words. With high-probability words, you don't have that help. (For example: The low-prob CCEHIKN is much easier to solve than the high-prob ILNORST, though they're both commonly known words.) So here's how you ease your burden a little: when studying eights, do the high-probability stuff most of the time, because those words will help you the most in the game, but mix in maybe 25% of the time doing a lower probability range of eights, something like 15000-16000. It'll expose you to a more varied and interesting set of words (at least in my opinion) that won't be quite as hard to unscramble as the high-prob words are, and again, you'll have more fun and get into the flow easier. And if you happen to unleash one of those obscure lower-probability beauties in a game, all the better!<br />
<br />
These two tips are just as useful when learning sevens, too.<br />

The two- and three-letter words are absolutely fundamental to your Scrabble game. If you learn nothing else, learn these: a player who knows these short words well has a very significant advantage over a player who doesn't. This is because these words facilitate other plays - if you know twos and threes well, you can find plays, particularly overlaps or underlaps, that make multiple words with other tiles on the board, and those points can add up. Consider the twos and threes your basic equipment.<br />
<br />
How to learn the twos and threes? Well, fortunately for you, you know a lot of them already: I'm sure "if", "and", "bag" and "at" are already in your arsenal. But there are more of these words than the typical English speaker realizes. Even in the smaller North American list, there are just over a hundred legal two-letter words and just over a thousand three-letter words. But again, many of them you already know from real life. Of the others, there are some that you might wonder whether they're valid words: RE, PA, HM, SH. They're things people say, but are they legal in Scrabble? And then there are oddities like KA, UT, or FE, new friends you just have to get to know. So your very first assignment, if you're brand new, is to make a list of the two-letter words you wouldn't be totally sure of if you saw them in a game. From the list of twos above, you'll end up with maybe 50-70 words that you'll need to get used to. Notice I've organized them by their starting letter above. When you go through your list, taking out the two-letter words you already know for sure, you can break it up similarly - maybe groups of between five and ten, associated with their first letters or some other way that works for you, so you have some nice small chunks you can absorb one at a time. Practice writing them out from memory until you have them down. I would advocate using the same approach for the threes, though there will be a lot more threes unfamiliar to you, so that'll take longer. But you'll get them, or at least most of them, in a reasonably short time, and then you'll be on your way. Even if you don't have all the threes perfect, if you have most of them within easy reach, your game will definitely show the benefits.<br />
<br />
But more importantly (and this goes even more for the threes), play and examine games. Against humans, against the computer (more on this later), wherever you can find. This is because it's even better for your memory to see these short words on a board, in a live game, than as a simple list, and twos and threes get played ALL THE TIME. The idea is to get to where you aren't just able to recite a list from memory - you're able to think of playing these words in a real game, seeing where they fit on the board, what you can do with them. You're starting the process of rewiring your brain to think like a Scrabble player: it's one thing to know NOH is a valid word, but much better to see right away that you can put your H at the end of NO on the board to make a nice play. If you do it enough, you'll start to see those possibilities naturally without thinking too hard, and that's what you want to learn to do.<br />

My name is Geoff, and I'm a Scrabble addict. I took up Scrabble seriously in 2002 and entered the wonderful world of tournament Scrabble in 2003, and almost fifteen years hence, I'm currently ranked eighth in North America for play using the international English word list (CSW), and I've won 32 of the 131 tournaments I've entered since I started. I've had plenty of failures and foibles to go with those successes, believe me, but it's more about the journey than the destination, and my experience in the game has been and continues to be very rewarding. I'm still enjoying the endless challenge this complex, multidisciplinary game has to offer. Scrabble is a word game at heart, but it is so much more: excelling at the game requires a good feel for probabilities, spatial board dynamics, even human psychology. But as a word game, it also requires a finely tuned memory and, when memory is imperfect, a strong sense of and instinct for the building blocks of the language.<br />

This isn't necessarily a straightforward task if we're talking about Scrabble in the English language, which is the most widespread form of the game. English is, essentially, the world's second language - it is the predominant language of business, for one, and English-language cultural expressions of all kinds have gained a foothold in so many places around the globe. Thus we have not just one English, but many Englishes, and everywhere English is used, it is influenced by contact with other languages and dialects. The English heard in Mumbai is distinct from the English heard in Melbourne, or Glasgow, or Monterrey, or Quebec City, or Johannesburg, or Tel Aviv, or Chicago, though it's all English. And the way English incorporates borrowings from other languages is deliciously haphazard: we have taken some words wholesale, barely changing the spelling or inflections, while in other cases we have anglicized foreign words, imposing more conventional English spelling and inflected forms. There is some amount of rhyme and reason to the process, but it's too complicated to reduce to simple rules of thumb. For the word gamer looking to master the words allowed by a game, this means you must commit as much as you can to memory and to be able to rely on sound instincts about the language, and about the quirks in the largely arbitrary list of legal words itself, when that memory is less than perfect.<br />
<br />
In the case of Scrabble, fortunately, it is not necessary to master all the hundred thousand-plus words in the playable lexicon to become highly proficient at the game. The game is structured so that certain words are much more important to know than others, and it's no secret within the Scrabble world which words those are. That's part of the mission of this blog: to help guide you, the aspiring player, to the most important words and show how to bring them into your arsenal over the board. You don't just want to know words to know them (or maybe you do - I do sometimes!) - you most want to know the words that will win you Scrabble games.<br />
<br />
But it's more than that. If I didn't have an affinity for words on some level, I wouldn't have taken up Scrabble. I'm not sure why I like words so much, but I do. Scrabble has been described as playing with strings of letters as game pieces, which indeed it is - but if those strings of letters were strings of numbers or colors or pictures of B-list celebrities, I wouldn't be a Scrabble player. Words are different, at least to me, and I see the beauty (and the ugliness, which only serves to illustrate the beauty further) within them. The point is this, and I'm sure I'll make it several times on this blog: you've got to enjoy the exercise, or else you won't do it. If that means you're not always learning the most important words you could be, that's completely okay. Therefore:<br />

<b>GEOFF'S FIRST PRINCIPLE OF LEARNING SCRABBLE WORDS:</b> <b>It's MUCH better to have a less than optimally efficient study plan you enjoy than a perfectly optimal one that feels like drudgery.</b> Because, let's face it, if it feels like drudgery too often, you're not going to stick with it. Yes, there's a balance you'll need to find - if you want to get ahead in the game, you'll find out soon enough that there are words you can't afford not to know, and you'll need to spend time on them, and sometimes doing the reps you need to nail those down will get to feel like kind of a slog. So always make sure to have some dessert with your vegetables; go exploring in the dictionary, look for fun, off-the-wall words and embrace them. Sure, you might never get to play those bizarre low-probability words over the board, but those opportunities do come up now and then, and it feels oh so good to be able to get plays like that down when they're clearly the best play available. (And if your goal is really ambitious - say, winning the world championship - it doesn't matter much which words you learn before others, since you'll be hitting the book so hard that you'll get to all the words anyway. If you're not hitting it that hard, then it's fair to ask whether that's really your goal, isn't it?) If you want to make that long journey from neophyte to word master, you'll need to build in some fun along the way.<br />
<br />
A note about word lists: as tournament Scrabblers know, there are two word lists commonly used in competitive play. The North American list, known as TWL or OWL (Official Word List), is used in the majority of tournaments in North America and in a few other places. The rest of the world, and the world championships, use a larger list, called CSW or Collins (since the Collins dictionary company publishes the official book), that includes virtually all of TWL but adds about 25-30% more words, most of them obscure. I started out playing TWL, being a North American, but I now play the larger CSW list pretty much all the time. However, the content on this site will mostly apply to players of either list, and when that's not the case, I'll make sure to indicate which words are allowable in one list but not the other - I want this blog to be helpful for both TWL players and CSW players.<br />
